WONDER Track

14-week training program

This innovative, 14-week track is aimed at training non-profit, public health, and good data advocates of tomorrow. During your time on the WONDER track, you will be utilizing data housed in the CDC’s Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) Database. You'll also build your 7 core data skills: querying, collecting, cleaning, enhancing, analyzing, visualizing, and humanizing data.

About

The WONDER Track is a BroadStreet Community Data Internship. This hands on internship has a mix of asynchronous/synchronous work. We welcome all skill levels but please know that this track is fast-paced with deadlines and lots of communication each week between team members and leads. The internship last 14-weeks with an estimated 5 - 10 hours each week. During the 14 weeks, interns will complete 3 months of sprints that build upon one another. At the end, you will be tasked with creating a presentation for a specific audience (i.e. stakeholder) in the state/county you have been working. This presentation will utilize both (a) the data that you have collected during your tenure on the track and (b) external research. You will then present these projects to your fellow team members and Broadstreet colleagues. Please join us if you are able to devote the time (5-10 hours each week) for 14 weeks. There are 3 internship cohorts each year that start of the first Monday of the month: February, June, October.

FAQs

How does the onboarding process work?

After the Orientation Webinar, there is a 10-day onboarding process to familiarize yourself with the workflow of The Broadstreet internships. This includes the a 3-day orientation plus a 7-day WONDER Track training where you will get to choose your stakeholder path (i.e. non-profit director, government official, or county public health official) and put in a state request. You will be focusing on this state and stakeholder path for the entirety of the 14-week cohort.

What am I going to get out of this experience?

Throughout your time on the WONDER track, you will meet people and colleagues, learn the 7 core data skills, you will gain experience in multiple data visualization platforms, and will create a number of presentations, maps, and charts for your data portfolio. We will also teach you how to package the skills you’ve learned to make you marketable to future employers.
