🎯 Data Challenge

Create a video infographic about measles immunization coverage rates (a.k.a. vaccination rates) your county and how rates compare to the recommended community immunity threshold of 95%.

3 Learning Objectives

  1. Identify and procure secondary data on measles immunization coverage for a selected county or region.

  2. Analyze secondary data using a data tool to determine the health status of a county population as it relates to measles immunization coverage and the community immunity threshold.

  3. Develop a data visualization or infographic that communicates a measles immunization coverage message tailored to a defined stakeholder or target audience.

Conflicts of Interest Disclosure

There are no financial conflicts of interest to disclose. None of the presenters or organizers of this event have any financial relationship, nor affiliation with the brands and organizations mentioned in this tutorial. We just really like this tool.

Prerequisites. Beginner-friendly, no prior experience needed. A free Canva account will be needed.

Keywords and core concepts also covered:

  • Basics of inputting data into 🧰 🛠️ Canva Sheets

  • Spreadsheet formulas (e.g., concatenate, if/then) in 🧰 🛠️ Canva Sheets

  • How do we measure "Immunization Coverage %" and what threshold matters for health?

What you'll need to complete this challenge

  • Time: 20-40 minutes

  • 🧰 Tools: Canva

  • 📊 Data:

    • Indicators:

      • Immunization Coverage (%) defined as the percent of a population that has immunity to measles. Immunity is estimated by the percent of people who have received two doses of the measles vaccine or the "vaccination rate." Note: State data and reporting varies in regards to population age group, vaccine type and number of doses, and years (CORI, 2026).

      • Community immunity threshold is defined as the county immunization coverage needed to prevent a measles outbreak. The recommended threshold is 95% (Measles & Rubella Partnership, 2026).

      • Number of Confirmed Measles Cases in a specific county or region (2025-2026).

Turning Immunization Data Into a Social Media Infographic

This walkthrough shows how to transform county-level immunization data into a social-media-ready infographic video using Canva and Canva Sheets. The goal is to transform raw immunization coverage numbers into clear, compelling, community-friendly content that supports awareness, understanding, and action.

Step 1: Open Canva Sheets

  • Access the Canva Sheets template from the resources section above and click 'Edit template' to create your own copy.

  • Log in to your Canva account. If you do not have an account, you can create one for free.

  • Set the View = 'PAGES' (bottom right). The 'Pages' view is the best way to view spreadsheets in Canva.

  • Familiarize yourself with the layout including the Canva sheets, instruction pages, blank templates, and examples.

Step 2: Collect Data on Immunization Coverage

Select tab: "US Immunization Coverage"
Select tab: "US Immunization Coverage"

  • Filter for your state at the top by clicking on 'Filter by US State(s)' on the top right.

Click to select state(s): 'Filter by US States'
Click to select state(s): 'Filter by US States'

  • Find ‘% Coverage’

    • Look up the immunization coverage percent for your county under the column ‘% Coverage’

    • Alternatively, find the county on the map to the left, click on it and access the data via the pop-up

See column: '% Coverage'
See column: '% Coverage'
An alternative way to access additional data is via popup. Click on county in map window.
An alternative way to access additional data is via popup. Click on county in map window.

Example: Orleans Parish, Louisiana, showed a 92% immunization coverage rate, which is below the community immunity recommended threshold of 95% for measles outbreak prevention and community protection.

You can also review nearby measles case reports to add context and urgency to your infographic.

  • To find Measles data (optional),

    • Navigate once again to the bar at the bottom of the table and select ‘US County-level Confirmed Cases’

    • Access the data for ‘2025-2026 Confirmed Cases’ via the table or the map

Step 2: Record Immunization Coverage Data in Canva

The project uses Canva Sheets, which works similarly to Excel.

Inside the shared sheet:

  • Claim a row by adding your name.

  • Enter your county and state abbreviation.

  • Immunization coverage percentage captured in the section above

  • Immunization coverage definition, which includes:

    • the vaccine type (e.g. MMR 2+),

    • population group (e.g. kindergarten), and

    • reporting year (e.g. 2024-2025)

The sheet automatically generates:

  • Whether your county is above or below the 95% threshold

  • Suggested wording for your infographic

  • Visual indicators like colors or emojis

Example generated text:

“Vaccination coverage in Orleans Parish, Louisiana is lower than the community immunity threshold of 95%.”

Step 3: Customize an Infographic Template

The phrase generated in the previous section can then be used to create your infographic. The template provided contains several example infographics that you may customize to your liking.

  1. Choose an infographic you like from the examples in the template.

  2. Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the page preview (this can be found at the bottom of the screen).

  3. Select 'Duplicate Page'.

  4. Edit the infographic text using the data in the spreadsheet.

  5. Update charts or percentage graphics to match your coverage rate.

You can personalize colors, layouts, and wording to fit your audience and communication style.

For more information, please watch the step-by-step walkthrough in the video linked at the top of the page.

Step 4: Download Your Final Project

Finally, download your infographic as an MP4 video or PNG image by clicking on the ‘Share’ button in the top right corner. You can also submit a PNG of your infographic to obtain a certificate! Check for more details below.

Step 5: Earn Your Certificate

Upload your infographic as an MP4 video or PNG image to earn a certificate using the buttons below.
